The 2002 François Guizot Prize

The fifth Prix Guizot of the Calvados General Council was awarded to Mona Ozouf for her book Les aveux du roman [The Novel’s Confessions].
A research director at the CNRS, she has devoted most of her work to the French Revolution, the history of schooling and the republican idea. Her recent books include Les mots des femmes (1995) [Women’s Words] and La muse démocratique [The Democratic Muse].

Les aveux du roman

In her book Les aveux du roman. Le XIXe siècle entre Ancien Régime et Révolution [The Novel’s Confessions: The Nineteenth Century between the Ancien Régime and the Revolution], published by Fayard in 2001, she sets out to show, through the characters created by novelists, how the French, throughout the nineteenth century, were constantly torn between the moral and social values inherited from the Ancien Régime and the new values brought by the Revolution, and were obliged to find a compromise. Her book thus helps us better understand what people may have had in mind during those periods of change in society and attitudes, periods in which modern France was taking shape. © Source: D.
